Nickel Metal Hydride Battery: Introducing a Sustainable Energy Storage Innovation
Nickel Metal Hydride Battery discharge, the negative electrode (anode) undergoes oxidation and releases hydrogen which diffuses through the separator to the positive electrode (cathode). At the cathode, hydrogen gets combined with oxygen from the nickel oxyhydroxide to form water. This electrochemical reaction allows electrons to flow through the external circuit, providing electrical energy. The chemical reaction that occurs at the electrodes can be represented as:
Anode (Negative Electrode): ABx + H2O + e− ↔ ABxH + OH−
Cathode (Positive Electrode): NiOOH + H2O + e− ↔ Ni(OH)2 + OH−
Overall: ABx + NiOOH ↔ ABxH + Ni(OH)2
